History

Let us give you a little bit of history......

The 125-127 SW 2nd Street building was once the Brauer & Conley Home Furnishers in 1913 and prior to being a furniture store, the location was the only brick livery stable in Corvallis and it was once owned and operated by Solomon King. Sol King was elected Sheriff of Benton County fives times.

The Peacock first opened it's doors in 1929 just down the street from it's current home of 125 SW 2nd Street.

In 1929 Philomath College closes it's doors, never to reopen. And automobiles have finally fully eclipsed the railroad as the chief means of passenger and freight service between Benton County and the rest of the State of Oregon.

In 1933 the OSAC (Oregon State Agricultural College) has it's first "Dad's Weekend".
In 1937 the name of Oregon State Agricultural College is changed to Oregon State College.

In 1942 the Oregon State College appears in it's first Rose Bowl and wins the game over Duke 20-16. To date, this remains OSU's only Rose Bowl victory.

In the 1940's the Peacock Tavern moves in to the 125-127 SW 2nd Street building. In 1957 Citizens Bank opens at Second Street and Madison Avenue.
On March 6, 1961 Oregon State College becomes Oregon State University.
1964 the flea collar is invented at OSU.

In 1976 Hewlett-Packard opens it's Corvallis plant. And in the 1980's HP invents the inkjet printer.

Throughout the years of being in business, customers have shared their own "Peacock story" with staff. The upstairs even has a famous nick name, "Top of The *Pea*cock". This famous nick name even graced an issue of Playboy Magazine in 1986 on their "100 Best College Bars" list.

Sadly in 1994 Linus Pauling, one of OSU's most distinguished graduates, dies on August 19th.

According to a survey in the May 1999 issue of Yahoo! Internet Life, OSU is named one of America's 100 Most Wired Colleges and Universities.

Sadly in 2002 the Whiteside Theatre closes.
In 2004 an $80-million dollar expansion to OSU's Reser Stadium is launched.
In 2005 the current owner of The Peacock Bar & Grill purchases the famous restaurant. February 14, 2009 Oregon celebrates the 150th anniversary of it's statehood.

After serving the Corvallis community since 1929, everyone here at The Peacock Bar & Grill would like to welcome you in to our little piece of history and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for giving us the chance to smile with you. We hope that whatever the reason we have had the honor to be of service to you today, that you allow us to do so sometime soon in the future.
